Solaris

I was told this worked on an HP system (same network as the sun server I am trying to set this up on)> but I get "netmask: bad value"2when I try it on the Sun:

route add net 199.42.23.192 netmask 255.255.255.192 204.104.63.30 1

I've tried many different iterations (leaving out netmask, only setting up route to net 199.42.23.0, direct route to IP address I am trying to get to, etc.), but am having no luck.

Any ideas?

Not sure about it, but I've used this iteration on a couple different UNIX and Linux variants -- it's worth a try!!!

route add 199.42.23.192/26 204.104.63.30 1

*** p.s. -- it may also be expecting an interface for the route like lan0 ...

Going by memory here
I have no idea how your subnets are set, but just by looking at the IP addresses/netmask in your post, you cannot get from the 204. subnet to the 199. subnet without going through a subnet gateway first.
You'll have to have 2 entries: one that points interface 204. to its default route, then another that points 204. to the 199. network.
