Lightbulb Solaris memory usage
One of my Solaris Unix server has total RAM 128G . top & vmstat command shows free memory is 86G and usage is 42G.

ps -eo pid,rss,comm

shows memory usage by process. when i sum all the memory usage by the process, it shows 1.9TB as shown below.

$ ps -eo pid,pmem,vsz,rss,comm | sort -rnk2 | awk '{sum+=$4} END {print sum}'
1990624752

what is the exact command to view the real time usage memory by process? when I sum up all the memory (rss) used by the process, it has to show 42G roughly. Anybody please let me know.

My guess is, ps -oe is showing the child processes as well and when you are calculating the sum, duplicates are added

If that's true, how to remove child process in the command and show only the real memory usage?

"ps" output is correct. There is no child process report. The issue is you are summing value that you shouldn't, as a large part of this memory is likely shared between processes.

You might want to use "prstat -a" to get memory usage per user and "prstat -Z" if you have zones.

For a detailed memory usage report per process, user "pmap -x <pid>".

I'm noticing pmap command "permission denied", may be access only for SA.

While prstat has no restriction and should help you understanding who is using your memory, prstat only allows root, the process owner and possibly specific users granted the required privilege to see the detailed memory usage.
