Network Printing issue

I have network printer registerd in solaris environment. When I issue print, it prints banner page. The issue printer is registerd in Print server which is running on Linux environment. So when I issue print in Print server, it doesn't print banner page as banner settings are made to turn off It work fine form print server. the print server uses CUPS.

The issue happens only when I print from (i.e displaying Banner page) Solaris to a network printer which is registered intially on print server.

Verifyied CUPS, follwing is the entry:

Code:
<Printer MNF20>
Info Shiplinx_new
Location
DeviceURI socket://10.10.3.45:9100
State Idle
StateTime 1393011221
Accepting Yes
Shared Yes
JobSheets none none
QuotaPeriod 0
PageLimit 0
KLimit 0
OpPolicy default
ErrorPolicy stop-printer
Option cpi 15
Option lpi 8
Option job-sheets none
</Printer>

++there is no banner set. Still I receive banner page when i print from Solaris

Regards,
Sunil.

Is the CUPS entry for the printer you showed us the Linux CUPS print system entry for the printer or the Solaris CUPS print system entry.

It sounds like the Solaris system print server is adding the banner page before forwarding the print request to the server physically connected to the printer.

Dan,

The code i have posted is a Linux CUPS print system entry. Solaris doen't have CUPS installed

You didn't say which version of Solaris you're using. Whether your Solaris system uses CUPS or an earlier printer management system, it has a list of printers to which print jobs can be sent and that list (or the command you use to send a job to a printer) may specify whether or not a banner page should be included in the hardcopy output.

On Solaris try this
Code:
lpadmin -p printername -l
lpadmin -p printername -o banner=never
lpadmin -p printername -l

Dan,

it's Solaris 10 or 5.10 as below:

# uname -a
SunOS ****** 5.10 Generic_118833-36 sun4v sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-T200

++There no CUPS defined in solaris server as below:

# ls -ltr cups
cups: No such file or directory
# pwd
/etc/init.d

++I am using traditional Solaris Print Manager to hook the network printer MNF20 which is defined in Print server running on Linux that has CUPS 1.3.7 installed.

++When I add printer in Solaris print manager, I go to Printer-->Add access to a printer

There I define :

a)Printer name
b)Print server
c)decription

++I don't get an option to disable banner or edit PCI,LCI settings when I define one as above. Please see below:

# lpstat -p MNF20 -l
printer MNF20 is idle. enabled since Feb 22 14:42 2014. available.
Remote Name: MNF20
Remote Server: ***********

++Also When I add printer through "Add access to a printer" I cannot see a configuration file for MNF20 been defined. Not sure where to check it.

Regards,
Sunil.

Germany,

I have done as you suggested. Still I could't see the banner update has been reflected.

# lpadmin -p MNF20 -o banner=never
# lpstat -p MNF20 -l
printer MNF20 is idle. enabled since Feb 22 14:44 2014. available.
Remote Name: MNF20
Remote Server: **********

Sunil.

Looks like the default on the print server is: banner on.
On a Cups client you can permanently override this in the Cups client (by means of .lpoptions).
In the Solaris client this might not work if the lpd protocol is used to talk to the print server. You can turn off per print job
Code:
lpr -h ...
lp -o nobanner ...
