[Solved] Need advice on Solaris 11 installation

Dear Solaris 11 Experts,

I have successfully install Solaris 11 text base version just downloaded but need to continue installing all remainder of software including XWindows... However, I am not sure what additional downloads are needed and how to install them.

There appears to be 3 types: text based, Live & Internet. I tried Internet install but it prompts for URL which didn't resolve since network setup has not been done yet.

It would be very much appreciate for your advice.

Thanks so much,

George

You might want to download the IPS repository and create a local IPS repository.
Preface - Copying and Creating Oracle Solaris 11 Package Repositories

Sections of interest should be how to create one from file (which you can obtain from Oracle site) and retrieving packages using HTTP interface.

After the repository is up, tell you clients (solaris x86/SPARC servers) which is it with pkg command
pkg set-publisher -G '*' -M '*' -g http://myrepo.domain:84 solaris
Port number is one you defined during repository svc creation ( retrieving packages using HTTP interface )

Then you can install packages which you need via pkg install command on clients

You don't say whether your question relates to Solaris 11 on SPARC or x86, however, I see from another thread that you have a X2200. If that's the box then I can recommend the Solaris 11 x86 Live DVD. I found installation an absolute doddle and it installs a GUI, has a GUI based Package Manager, and offers X11 as an option.

I have spent my life on SPARC boxes and only recently put Solaris on x86 but using this DVD it was dead easy. (I set up a test web server with it).

IPS repository is for both architectures, meaning you can use one IPS repository for SPARC and x86.

Successfully installed Solaris 11 using Live Installation mode

Thanks to both hicksd8 & Peasants' valuable suggestions,

I took the easy option to have successfully installed Solaris 11 using the Live Installation mode suggested by hicksd8.

Much appreciate for your inputs,

George
