i think that is the problem.
Is /a/dev empty or missing?

/a/dev is not empty. There is no dsk folder in /a/dev/...

Try to recreate the device links with the -r boot option. E.g.
Code:
ok> boot -r

or
Code:
# reboot -- -r

If the device nodes are missing from /dev/dsk and /dev/rdsk try this.....

Boot from cd and mount your hard disk root filesystem under /a

Assuming this is a standard installation with everything in the normal places.....

Code:

# devfsadm -r /a -p /a/etc/path_to_inst

Then, if necessary, check the /etc/vfstab is correct using 'format' to see the slices. If vfstab has not been modified this may not be necessary.

Shutdown the system

Code:
# init 0

then boot the system with.....

Code:

ok> boot -r

Does the system come up okay?

Code:

# devfsadm -r /a -p /a/etc/path_to_inst

Can you explain to me what this does?

You say that your device nodes (eg, /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0) are all missing.

devfsadm=DEVice FileSystem ADMinistration

With the switches that I specified it will recreate the device nodes in all directories (/dev/dsk, /dev/rdsk, /dev/cfg) for the filesystems it can see during its search.

So looking in /dev/dsk and /dev/rdsk you should see the device nodes after running this command. As said, you need to boot from cd and mount your hard disk root filesystem under /a. (The switch "-r /a" tells devfsadm that the root filesystem is there).

After that you should check (carefully) the /etc/vfstab (/a/etc/vfstab) to ensure it tells Solaris where to find all the filesystems (eg, /usr).

Finally you must reboot with "boot -r" and wait for Solaris to reconfigure everything as it boots.

All being well the system will come up okay.

Thank You for all your responses..
I managed to get the server back up and running..
Code:
# devfsadm -r /a -p /a/etc/path_to_inst

Started throwing up errors.
so I
Code:
fsck -F ufs -y /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0

Then mounted the file system on /a
Code:
# devfsadm -r /a -p /a/etc/path_to_inst
#init 0
#boot -r

Worked like a charm.
Thank you once again.
