how can I find out what value "maxcontig" is set at for a particular filesystem?

You can use fstyp but it can only be used on unmounted file systems.

How do use fstyp as I have no idea?
Have looked at the "man" page , but what is the "special" file supposed to be?

I just tried fstyp on a mounted filesystem. It works. Be sure to pipe output to more though. If you don't know the special file, look in /etc/vfstab.
