correct method to recognize new external DAT drives? and a technical {ok} prompt?

yesterday I attached my external HPsurestore DAT drives to my v440 boxes.
one one box, I did a "boot -r"
on the other, I did a "drvconfig -vC"

the drvconfig was nice, as I didn't have to bounce the box...both systems now recognize associated DAT drives

I was wondering if these are the accepted methods to recognize new hardware?

last question,
I initiated the boot command from the {ok} prompt (on the console), but I can't remember how I got it?
