"Permission denied" when changing IP netmask

hello everyone,

I am new on unix systems. I am working with a Solaris 10 OS.
When i try to change netmask on certain interface:
Code:
[emc: ../admin 177> ifconfig bge1 netmask 255.255.0.0]

I get:

Code:
[ifconfig: SIOCSLIFNETMASK: bge1: permission denied]

How can i enable permission for changing that ? I have administrator privileges.

Your help is much appreciated.
thanks,

SIOCSLIFNETMASK usually relates to a bad CIDR specification or a condition in which the device is busy. You may want 255.255.255.0 (/24) as your subnet, for example if your bge1 has an ip like 10.n.n.n where none of the "n" is a zero.

Thanks Jim for your reply.
Actually, subnet is 255.255.255.0 and i want to change it to 255.255.0.0. I will explore on that CIDR thing you are mentioning.

yes, i'm root user. In fact i could change it before, but as the changes are not permanent, after some server reboot, changes were lost.

Code:
emc: ../admin 182> ifconfig bge1 10.200.13.98 netmask 255.255.0.0 up
ifconfig: SIOCSLIFNETMASK: bge1: permission denied
