there is goes:

Code:
emc: ../admin 183> dladm show-dev
dladm: insufficient privileges
emc: ../admin 184> ifconfig -a
lo0: flags=2001000849<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,VIRTUAL> mtu 8232 index 1
        inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000

emc: ../admin 185> cat /etc/netmasks
#
# The netmasks file associates Internet Protocol (IP) address
# masks with IP network numbers.
#
# network-number netmask
#
# The term network-number refers to a number obtained from the Internet Network
# Information Center.
#
# Both the network-number and the netmasks are specified in
# "decimal dot" notation, e.g:
#
# 128.32.0.0 255.255.255.0
#
192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0
10.200.13.0 255.255.255.0

you are NOT root...

Code:
emc: ../admin 183> dladm show-dev
dladm: insufficient privileges

check the output of id and who am i
# 11
Old 04-24-2013
There it goes:
Code:
emc: ../admin 186> id
uid=9001(admin) gid=102(dba)
emc: ../admin 187> who am i
admin pts/1 Apr 24 16:39 (10.200.13.219)

root should be uid=0 and gid too.

is there anything i can do ? i don't have any other user credentials

Ask the system administrator to do the changes.

is this possibly a zone or LDOM?

If so the procedure is slightly different depending on which level you are at.

if it's a zone you can set it at the LDOM level by doing zoneconfig -z "zonename"

if at the LDOM level then it's completely different.

Gentlemen,

Finally, i realized that i was establishing SSH connections. My root credentials were enabled for telnet connection (i knew it was a basic mistake i was committing) .
I could do the desired changes.

I want to thank everyone for the help provided. Even though it was a stupid error, i learned several things on Unix.
