To my knowledge smartmontools were originally meant for open Solaris 11, not 10. As I understand it, the product analyzes disks using SATA, SCSi, and some other disk controller protocols, and then makes predictions about future failure probability.
Since OpenIndiana (open Solaris 11) and the whole open source thing for Solaris has pretty much died because of the oracle purchase of Sun, I would not hold out any hope for a retrofit of smartmontools for 10.
I found a document: Bad block HOWTO for smartmontools
My hard drive is Maxtor:
root]# fdisk -lu /dev/hda
Disk /dev/hda: 81.9 GB, 81964302336 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9964 cylinders, total 160086528 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x3f4e3f4d
