To keep the forums high quality for all users, please take the time to format your posts correctly.
First of all, use Code Tags when you post any code or data samples so others can easily read your code. You can easily do this by highlighting your code and then clicking on the # in the editing menu. (You can also type code tags
and
by hand.)
Second, avoid adding color or different fonts and font size to your posts. Selective use of color to highlight a single word or phrase can be useful at times, but using color, in general, makes the forums harder to read, especially bright colors like red.
Third, be careful when you cut-and-paste, edit any odd characters and make sure all links are working property.
Let's just say a few things about flash archives. (I see your other thread about what's backed up in a flash archive).
With flarcreate you can determine exactly what's backed up by specifying the root of the backup and also specifying any exclusions you want.
Be aware that although a flash archive is meant to be a "portable" archive, it is still basically (by default) a cpio backup. Indeed, if you run the "flar split" command on a flash archive, you will end up with a number of small files and , typically, one big file which is the cpio archive.
It is also the case that, if you want to port to a new hardware platform, the flash archive (really a cpio backup plus other stuff) must contain all the drivers for the new platform. Do you remember whether you installed the "Entire OEM Distribution" on the platform you are coming from? This normally means install all known drivers. However, even this does not give a guarantee that a port to new hardware will work. For example, on x86 your original distribution might not have contained SATA drivers because they didn't exist at the time but your new platform has a SATA controller.
Although flash can be great for installing on the same or similar hardware it isn't always a panacea. I have done things like install the O/S on the new platform, take backups of /platform and /kernel, restored my ufsdumps or flar files from the old platform, and then restored /platform and/or /kernel to ensure I've got all the drivers I need. I've then done the procedure I detailed in post#2.
As I said in post#2, it is an engineering job. I hope that helps.
Do post any issues as you come across them.
Have you already tried restoring all your filesystems and then booting from CDROM to put the system through an "upgrade"?

I am new to Sun.
I brought Sun Fire 280R to practice UNIX. What are the requirements for the monitor/CRT? Will it burn out old non-Sun CRTs? Does it need LCD monitor?
Thanks. (3 Replies)
