How to get day of the week from a timestamp using Solaris
Looking for something equivalent to what im able to do with Linux:

date -d 20120523 +%a 
Wed


Is there a Solaris equivalent?

Yes,
the Solaris version of date doesn't accept an arbitrary date like
the GNU date with the -d option though.

Not sure if Solaris >= 10 ships with the gdate (GNU date) in /usr/sfw/bin.

No, it does not as of the last release 10/9
