Firstly, I'll cheat and give you this link to save me some time:-
Solaris UNIX: How to Setup DNS Client configuration / name server
The files are:-
/etc/hosts which will resolve local stuff (your subnet and LAN)
Lines contain an IP address followed by a host name
Further afield the system looks at resolv.conf
Lines contain the word "nameserver" followed by an IP address.
There can be multiple lines ie. multiple DNS servers.
For this to work the file:
/etc/defaultrouter should tell your system where the gateway is to get out of your LAN.
One line contains just an IP address. Nothing else need.
With the above your system should know how to get beyond your LAN and one or more DNS servers to send resolution requests to.

Forgot to say that some of these files may not exist after a raw install. Just create them with an editor and populate them as described.

resolv.conf also resides in /etc
