Problems connecting Solaris 10 to network via ISP

I have just installed Solaris 10 (x86) on my PC, which is connected to an ISP via a Netgear DG834G firewall/modem router. I can't find the network. My router has the IP address 192.168.0.1 and my ISP assigned IP address is 214.159.X.Y

I have edited various files based upon information I have gleaned from the web, but still no joy. File edited/created:
/etc/hosts
214.159.X.Y hostname hostname.plus.net loghost
(question should these be separated by spaces or tabs?)

/etc/nodename
hostname

/etc/inet/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
214.159.X.Y hostname hostname.plus.net loghost

/etc/defaultrouter
192.168.0.1

/etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 212.159.13.49
nameserver 212.159.13.50

/etc/hosts.deny
ALL:ALL

/etc/netmasks
214.159.X.Y 255.255.255.0

/etc/hostname.lo0
hostname
(is the ethernet interface on a x86 sys lo0?)

I have clearly got something wrong or missed something out. Any help would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Chris.

Your netgear router is almost certainly set up to give your computers DHCP assigned addresses. That 214.159 address given by your ISP is going to be the IP address of the router itself (and it is probably dynamic too).

But your Solaris setup is what you would do if you were setting up a static IP on the solaris box. This is very likely to be the problem. I've not set up DHCP on Solaris before so I don't know the answer off the top of my head - but I know I've contributed to other threads where I copied in text from Solaris manuals to tell somebody how to do it.

Do a search on this site for "Solaris dhcp" or something like that and I'm sure you'll turn up some info.

Thanks for this. I will look up DHCP and have a go tomorrow. However, in my case I have a static IP address assigned by my ISP i.e. 214.159.X.Y and my router also has a single IP address which is 192.168.0.1.

I am also not confident that I actually have any drivers for the ethernet connection. I have an ASUS A7N8XE which includes a Marvel l 88E8001 Gigabit LAN. I have booted with the b -r option, according to a posting I found on the web should reconfigure the OS and add new devices. When I do a prtconf, I cant see anything that looks like a network driver (but I'm a newbie, so could easily be wrong) .

Any further ideas would be gratefully received.

Thanks again,
Chris.

Ok, but even if the ISP assigned a static address to you, that is what your Netgear gets. It will hand out a dhcp address to your Solaris box. You probably could be able to make the netgear box give a static address if you wanted to go that route. You could use 192.168.1.100 for your Solaris box for example. I know I can with the Linksys router I use - I did it for a printer that didn't like dhcp too well.

As far as the driver goes, I wouldn't be suprised at all if Solaris doesn't have a driver for a NIC built into a PC motherboard. That is the one bad thing about Solaris. It is incredible on Sun hardware - probably the best OS you could ever use. But on anything else the HW and driver support is poor at best.

I seem to be lucky there is a network driver for the Marvell Gigabit LAN for Solaris 7 + on the ASUS website:

http://www.asus.com.tw/support/downl...Language=en-us

The package seems to come with a reasonable looking set of instructions, but I will confirm when I have actually got it working! BTW, have you got any ideas as to what is the best way for me to transfer the file from my Windows file system to Solaris? Am I correct in thinking that CDs in Solaris have a different format to Windows?

Thanks again for your help.
Chris.

Use the High Sierra FS type when you mount the CD.

Something like
mount -F hsfs -o ro /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s0 /cdrom
(depending on what device file refers to your CD drive, of course) should mount it.

Cheers

When you donīt know your CD-ROM Device Path:

iostat -En

There will be a List of your Devices and infos like vendor,model,....
