where is default PATH

where is default PATH
When I ssh to a Solaris server, a "default" path has been established for me. Where is this "default" established?

I find an export of the PATH variable in /etc/profile but I do not find where the "default" is set.

I found other threads here describing how to set a PATH, etc but did not find an answer to my question.

There's many places it can be set. Which are used depends on your shell. See your shell's manual page for what profile files it checks on load. Also remember that these profile files are scripts, not just lists of variables; some might just add to PATH rather than set it. Or they might even source totally different files.

I using ksh which points me to /etc/profile. I am not logging all the way in. In particular:

$ ssh <host> 'which foo'
no foo in /usr/bin /bin /usr/sbin /sbin /usr/local/bin

This PATH is not set by my ".profile"

You get your default, full, login shell when you login with ssh.

ksh checks more than /etc/profile, it also checks ~/.profile. It also checks whatever files those two files tell it to also include.

Here's an idea -- run ksh with -x so it prints every line as it executes it:

echo "ksh -l -x" | script > debug.log
# check contents of debug.log to see exactly what it's running on login

The default PATH can be set in /etc/default/login (PATH and SUPATH variables).
