Solaris 8 login problem

Hello guys, I am new to Solaris. i was trying to install VNC on my Solaris 8 sparc machine. I was not able to edit services file. I tried to change permission of entire etc folder and subfolder to a user. Few files inside etc directory changed to user and few stayed as root. I logged off and tried to log back in and now as soon as it boots up it pops only one small window "Login incorrect; Please try again." It did't even ask me to enter username or password. Please help...

Lay off mucking with admin files unless you are admin, have root.

I run vnc without any services file mod. VNC knows the socket numbers without a lookup of name to number. What made you think you needed that? Reading the instructions, again? Just run vncserver on the target host to launch Xvnc and some vncviewer on the client. I use one vnc for each host, so they last until that host is rebooted. I use ultravnc as my client. (There are many, and each screws up a different way!)
Code:
my_id 13629 1 6 Nov 2 ? 539:12 Xvnc :1 -desktop my_host:1 (my_id) -auth /home/my_id/.Xauthority -geometry 1200x900 -depth 16 -rfbwait 30000 -rfbauth /home/my_id/.vnc/passwd -rfbport 5901 -pn

I don't suppose you have backups of any sort? Or at least another similar machine to compare to?

One way or another all the permissions and ownerships for /etc/ are going to have to be put back to normal. As you've discovered, the ownership of some things in /etc/ are pretty important. If you have nothing to compare to, that's going to be hard without reinstalling.
