DNS needs to be refreshed periodically to work

We are having a problem with external address being resolved. All internal addresses work fine. Refreshing the DNS server service solves the issue for a little while(I don't have an exact number on how long, <1 hour) and then eventually stops working.

We use Webem to manage the build in DNS and we have moved to a new server. All the files in /var/named were copied over.

We have a cron job set up to refresh the service. What would be misconfigured that causes the need for a refresh?

Sounds like recursion isn't working... possibly access to root servers isn't allowed? (e.g. network wise)

Is it possible that if it is an access problem that it's related to only some of the root servers? There are 12 IP4 root servers in our named.root file.

Also, the lookups fail intermittently which is why I pose the question above.

I have Windows DNS server and it only has one root hint server. It's the same as the first server in the named.root file on Solaris. The lookups are normal for the Windows server.

I'll start some ping tests.

Thanks.
