solaris8 x86 installing question,thanks

when i installed solaris8 x86 to my computer,the step of partition,I see a overlap patition i do not know what the partition can be use,and which step on install os can set the root user name and password,I read sun doc for solaris 8 installed doc,it refer to when you completely installed solaris8,you reboot,and
ensure solaris patition is active partition,please tell me how to set the solaris patition to a active patition

The overlap partition refers to the entire hard disk. You don't use it for anything. It is always on partition 2. The other partitions added together will equal the overlap partition (look at the range of clusters for each partition).

I'm not sure about the active partition part. I think they are referring to if you have both Windows and Solaris on there you need to make the active partition the one you want to boot by default, but I'm not positive on that.

When you have rebooted after the install it will run a finish script that should include asking you to set the root password. At least that is how it works when I install on a sparc system.

Just for Info:

The Solaris Overlap Slice (Partition) is mainly for Backup Purposes. For Example you want to backup your entire machine, you have to backup at least / and swap.
So you can just backup one Slice which consists of the other slices.....

The Active Patition must be the Partition where the Boot Loader is located...

Is there a way to install Solaris 10 x86 with an external DVD drive that connects through the USB port? I would think I would run GRUB off of a floppy disk and somehow use that to make it look to the USB port to boot from but I don't know how to do that. Can anyone help me out? (1 Reply)
