The ./ is a pathname. If I have a script called tool1 in /usr/contrib/bin, I might invoke as "/usr/contrib/bin/tool1". If I have a script called tool2 in the current directory, I might invoke it as "./tool2". There is a directory called "." in every directory and it is a link to the directory that contains it. So whereever you are you can call the current directory just ".". And ".." works in a similar fashion to mean the parent directory.

Thanks, I was hoping that either calling a script with "." or not would allow the initiating script to end while the called script is still running. But, I have found that regardless of how the called script is called, it runs them sequentially. My theroy, and it was wrong was based on the fact that if a script is called with "." the called script is executed in the same shell, otherwise its executed in a new shell.

A script could call a second script and put an ampersand after it,/some/path/some-script &

Now some-script is running in the background and the parent script does not wait for it to finish. Both scripts run more or less at the same time. Is this what you're looking for?

WOW! if a called script like in the example you supplied is used, the called script may run while the initiating script ends? It seems there would be an advantage if for example a server script (Daemon) called the required scripts and then returned to a previous state such as sleep. Am I on track with this idea? thanks for the help.

However, is there any scenario where a script will not run sequentially when called?
I already answered that question in post #6:

The shell will wait for the commands to complete as long as no background job is launched.

sorry for the delay. I work nights and had some time off. Yes, i finally understand what you were telling me along. I did a test. I have this deamon script that fires off a script every 5 minutes and it does so in background. So I am piecing it together. Thanks again.
