OpenSolaris, Solaris, Solaris Express - differences

What are the differences between these systems? I have to use Oracle's product but I do not know who to choose

OpenSolaris is the experimental version of Solaris. This version is usually the next release or update of Solaris.

Solaris is the production version which Oracle provides support.

Solaris Express is Oracle's name for Solaris 11.

  • OpenSolaris is at the same time:
  • the name of the Solaris code which has been open sourced
  • the name of the community around it
  • the name of a distribution based on it.
  • Solaris is the generic name of the operating system, it can be applied to every version.
  • Solaris Express is the name of an OpenSolaris based distribution which was still close to Solaris 10. It has been obsoleted by OpenSolaris (project Indiana).
  • Solaris 11 Express is the latest Solaris release.
