upgrade solaris mysql version...

hi i need to upgrade my solaris mysql version.. can u guide me the upgrade steps..
my current version is
4.0.31-log

i need to upgrade to 5.0
..

is query execution dependable on mysql versions..
cause .. IS NULL not working in mysql 4.0 ..

i need to know which one is best ... upgrading from the persisting version or fresh installation of 5.0.. since this is a initial stage .. i didn create a much tables for my application .. my ultimate need is to upgrade from 4.0 to 5.0..

i went through mysql documentation .. but i couldn understand certain terminology.. can u guide me ... the steps to upgrade mysql 4.0 to mysql 5.1 ..

hi..

i already went through upgrade steps but thats not clear to my mind...
i have currently version 4.0 working.. i want to upgrade to 5.1 ..
which means do i need to again install 4.1 ... and then 5.0 . then 5.1 ...?

guide me with your ideas..
can u guide me with step by step procedure ...
its breaking my mind since last morning..
