Operating Systems Solaris /var/adm/loginlog

Lightbulb /var/adm/loginlog
As root I have created the loginlog file in /var/adm with permissions (r and w) for root:root only.

Failed attempts(> 5) to log in as root do not get logged in the file.

What am I missing??
I am on a Solaris 8 Box.

Why did you do that? The man page says "root:sys". Did you try that?

man loginlog

Before changing it for root:root I earlier had it as root:sys

I am trying to connect the box thru' a X-Window software(Kea!X)

OK, I just tried it on SunOS 5.8. I used "telnet localhost" for my test. What they mean is that the login program itself must see 5 failed attempted in a single invocation of the login program. At first that was not possible for root because CONSOLE was set in /etc/default/login. This causes the login program to abort after a single root failure. Once I commented CONSOLE out, root failures got logged.
