Solaris 9 upgrade question.

I have an old sun v890 server running solaris 9. Apparently we need to be running solaris 10. I don't know much about the server history, there isn't any documentation. I hesitant to rebuild from scratch and loose user configuration settings etc...

How difficult is it to upgrade to solaris 10? At this point worst case I rebuild it anyway so how do I go about this?

Have you got any spare drives for the box ? If so this guide may be useful to you.

I went to reboot the system to get the video and it comes up with an error
Init: cannot create /var/adm/utmpx

Init single user mode

Enter maintenance password to enter maintenance mode.

I get no response from the keyboard or serial ports.

I can boot to the cdrom in single user mode, now what?

I hadn't changed anything, I just reboot it and it came back with the "Init: cannot create /var/adm/utmpx" I cannot boot to single user mode but I can boot to the cdrom.

When you reboot, can you type anything at the "OK" prompt ?
If it auto-boots try hitting STOP-A early on and should stop at the ok prompt.
If it does, then you should be able to "boot -r" and when it stops with the error, you should be able to logon....

yes, I can type at the ok prompt. I set it not to autoboot until I get it fixed. I'll try the boot -r

Thanks.

boot -r doesn't seem to help. It prompts you for the password but nothing happens.
