Operating Systems Solaris Renamed lib directory by mistake

I also have some offical SOlaris 8 install disks.

Solaris 8 Installation, 6/00

Solaris 8 Software, 1 of 2, 6/00

Solaris 8 Software, 2 of 2, 6/00

But, like I said, I also have similar hand-burned disks that say 10/01 on them...

Well, /lib is an entry in /, but this is probably /usr/lib, so "a typo" if /usr is a different disk! As I recall, old Solaris had only one linked to the other, but newer Solaris has these as 2 lib dirs.
Gotcha. Yes, my lib directory is under /usr.

I find it odd that I can create a new directory, but I cannot rename any...Am I just doing it wrong in File Manager? I single-click a folder to highlight it, then go to Select -> Rename. Then I rename it and press the Enter key, but it reverts back to the old folder name.

Odd, File Manager should be doing link() and unlink() calls on existing open libraries, not system() or fork/exec.

Does File Manager know how to make sym-links?

I think you'r on to something!

I did this within file manager:

- created folder called "test"
- highlighted "test"
- clicked on "Selected" menu item
- clicked on "Copy as Link" (that brought up a window where I could choose were to put an apparent copy of test AND it lets me rename it)
- so I named the copy "testZ"
- clicked OK

Now, there is a folder for "test" and a folder for "testZ"

Soooo,

Just to refresh, I stupidly renamed my "lib" directory to be "lib_old".

So, could I use the "Copy as Link" option I just discussed to create a copy of "lib_old" with the new name of just "lib." Now, there are 6gb of data in the folder, so it might take a while...

But would this work, can I try it safely?

So, after reading the wiki article on symlinks, I should be able to symlink the lib directory, then rename the lib_old directory back to just "lib" and finally, delete the symlink.

Sound good?

It sounds good to me, but does anyone see that hurting other paths to relief?

I can't really say, but on systems I am used to /lib is not (never was, never is) a symlink to /usr/lib ....

If /lib was indeed a symlink, and you moved it to /lib-old, seems you should be able to see that /lib-old was a symlink.

There is actually a symlink for lib in the root directory that points towards /usr/lib, but it looks to be broken now, because I renamed /usr/lib to /usr/lib_old.

I did not make that symlink.

A sym link in /usr called lib pointing to /usr/lib_old is what we need.

PS: Sym links do cost a microsecond more or less, but we are not fussy right now! Smilie
