From the data posted, it looks like the sort process is IO-bound.

What's it trying to read from?

To me, it looks very much like a CPU bounded single threaded process on a 16 CPU machine.

Offhand, it seems like too low a CPU utilization to be CPU bound, but then again the OP never said how many CPUs are on his machine.

We aren't answering to the OP but to post #6. The number of CPUs isn't indeed mentioned but the fact cpu18 and cpu22 are reported give a clue this isn't a entry level machine.

It is certainly possible to see a 99+% idle server with a CPU bounded process, if it has 100 CPUs or more online.
