Processing user input in .sh file

Hi,

I am new to shell scripting.

script should accept the user value and then compare that value with the null.

If null then assign the value "*" to the variable else will use the user inputed value.

How to do this ?

With Regards

Hi,

The thing is I want to schedule the cron job using shell scripting
So, if the user dont input the value then script will accept as "*"
I have done something as shown below but not getting desired output.

Code:
#-----------------------------
# Set the values for cron job
#-----------------------------

printf "$FBOLD\nPlease enter the minute (0-59): $FREG"
read minute
    if [ "$minute" = "" ]
    then
     minute="*"
     printf "$minute"
     else
     printf "$minute"
    fi

With Regards
