NIS on vmware workstation

Hi Admins,
I just have a doubt on NIS that, is it possible to run NIS on vmware workstation running more than 1 solaris instances.
i.e. can we setup one solaris instance as master and others as slaves...??

I have vista on my laptop. I am concern about the domain name it will ask while doing setup...

Please advise.

Thnx

Why won't it ? The NIS domain name is your choice anyway.

So you mean I can assign any name for domain name..

I am using dhcp on all solaris 10 instances..

Shall I go with domainname "domainname" command and /etc/defaultdomain file....to set the name???

or anything else/extra i might need???

Thnx for response

Sure, you manage your own domain with NIS so you can choose any domainname you like. However, that doesn't make sense to use dhcp at least for the NIS master. What exactly are you planning to do with this NIS installation ?

Actually I wanted to learn NIS...
So first I am planning it on my vmware workstation....

So I just configured one instance as master and other as slave.
But I am getting an error while setting the client as NIS slave:

# ypwhich
:domainname not set on this machine.:
Then I put some name on both client and server.

Then it says:
can't communicate with ypbind...

The nis/client and nis/server are in maintenance mode...How to make it online....

Also as dhcp won't give any hostname, so when I try
#ypinit -s "master server ip address" ( as no hostname is there )
just hangs ....say trying to connect to ip address from domain...in /var/adm/messages

Please suggest...

Doesn't worth trying to configure a NIS client if the master is down. Start with configuring properly the master.

Thnx jlliagre,
As you said, I configured master server with any domain name. e.g. I used the name" nisdomain"

Now my master nis server is working fine.
I can see the name of master server using ypwhich.
#ypwhich
unknown..........as I am using DHCP- so hostname is showing unknown.

But I still can't able to run nis on client.

#/usr/sbin/ypinit -s unknown .....(as master server name is unknown)

dump_ypmaps: Can't bind for domain nisdomain. Reason: can't communicate with rpcbind
Can't enumerate maps from unknown. Please check that it is running.

bash-3.00# ypwhich
ypwhich: can't communicate with rpcbind

bash-3.00# svcs -a | grep nis/client
maintenance 23:22:44 svc:/network/nis/client:default

Please suggest.

Thnx
