I need help urgently.

I've been running NIS for 4 years without problem. And just two weeks ago, all my users are unable to change their password which never happens before.

When we issue passwd or yppasswd, this is what we get
passwd : Changing password for Jennifer
Enter existing login password :
New Password :
Re-enter new Password :
Create clnt Failure : RPC : Program not registered

And sometime we get the Permission Denied after we re-enter new Password.

My NIS only does the authentication and all user home directory are on another server.

First question for you: What changed two weeks ago? If there are multiple System Administrators, call a meeting, find out what changed - if nothing, then you need to look at what is broken.

Also, if you attempt to change the password on an account while actually on the NIS server, do you still have a problem? You can also try passwd loginname (example: % passwd rtmanual ) and see if that works - both on the NIS server and other systems.

Post your results - the error you posted seems to point to some type of NFS problem.

Very sorry for the late reply. I've forgot to post my results.
Please accept my thousand of apologise.

I faced no problem changing password on the NIS server.

I just perform stop and start the NIS server for a couple days and test changing again untill no error message.

Its tooks me about a week to have the passwd change problem solve.

I did not change anything nor rebuilt my NIS.

Weird right !!
