Boot issues Solaris 10 + V440

Hello,

I've a very weird problem with one of the machines. When I try to boot off a working DVD that I used to install another system with it spits out the following message:

Sun Fire V440, No Keyboard
Copyright 2007 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
OpenBoot 4.22.33, 8192 MB memory installed, Serial #63056041.
Ethernet address 0:3:ba:c2:28:a9, Host ID: 83c228a9.

System is operating in Service Mode.

Rebooting with command: boot cdrom -s
Boot device: /pci@1e,600000/ide@d/cdrom@0,0:f File and args: -s
Bad magic number in disk label
Can't open disk label package

Can't mount root

Evaluating:
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable.
{1} ok
SC Alert: Maximum Boot Failures on Host.

I've tried with 4 different DVDs but still to no avail. I cannog find any useful information on google as well.

Could someone give me a hint on how to solve this problem?

I have to re-install the operating system on the machine.

Thanks!

which version of solaris do you use? (major and minor release!)

Are you using the SPARC dvd ? (not x64/x86)

Also try:

Code:
ok setenv service-mode?=false
ok boot

If that doesn't work, post the output of:

Code:
ok printenv

Hi,

The DVD I am trying to boot from is sol-10-u8-ga-sparc-dvd. It works for sure because I've managed to boot a V480 system from it.

Same result. Here is the output:

Currently the system is in service mode ( the key is set in Diagnostic mode position) but that shouldn't prevent me from booting from the CD, right?

It could be that your install dvd is corrupted. Can you try another dvd?

Yes, you should be able to boot even though the key is in diag mode - it just take longer.

I've tried 4 different DVDs. From this one I can boot another system. Is there some special way that I've to use to record the DVD? To my understanding is pretty standard...

True. I d/l the bits from Sun then use cdrecord (the Schily version) to record my cd/dvds.

It could be your DVD drive on the v440. Can you boot in normally and insert the dvd and read it? If you have a cleaning cd (felt on one side and plastic on the other) you could put that in for a few seconds and remove it.

Not sure where to go from here ....... Smilie
