Swap issue

hi all,

yesterday, on one of the SunFire4800 system, there was a strange issue seen.

Code:
# df -h
Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on
/dev/md/dsk/d0 4.7G 554M 4.1G 12% /
/proc 0K 0K 0K 0% /proc
mnttab 0K 0K 0K 0% /etc/mnttab
fd 0K 0K 0K 0% /dev/fd
/dev/md/dsk/d10 20G 2.5G 17G 13% /var
swap 100M 104K 94M 79% /var/run
swap 167M 229M 100M 3% /tmp
#

swap -l was saying

Code:
#swap -l
swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
/dev/md/dsk/d5 85,5 16 10033520 10033520

in dmesg, below given logs were appearing:

Code:

what I had to do is to reset the OS using 'init 6' and then the system is back in normal state.

Now the question:

in normal state, the system's 'df -h' show swap space around 10G like below:

Code:
# df -h
Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on
/dev/md/dsk/d0 4.7G 344M 4.3G 8% /
/dev/md/dsk/d15 13G 3.2G 10G 25% /usr
/proc 0K 0K 0K 0% /proc
mnttab 0K 0K 0K 0% /etc/mnttab
fd 0K 0K 0K 0% /dev/fd
/dev/md/dsk/d10 20G 4.7G 15G 24% /var
swap 9.7G 104K 9.7G 1% /var/run
swap 9.7G 7.7M 9.7G 1% /tmp

in prstat nothing was show abnormal but no new process was forkable, no process could be started.

any idea where this swap had gone..

During the point of time, some application process might be using it heavily.
but one strange thing.. how come the 2 outputs are so different? are they from different servers? How come the /usr is not mounted in first output? was your system in single user mode or anything?? confusing..

Hi busyboy,

Since this is a SunFire4800, you can start by checking out the SC (system controller) logs.

Is this platform standard single domain or dual domain, setup?

Have you made any changes to your system, added hardware, or changed system settings?

Any new applications installed?

Is your system currently running the latest OS kernel Patch & is the platform firmware up to the latest reccommended OBP level.(open boot prom)

I hope this is of help or a useful pointer.
