New volume set not recognized

Good evening,

I am fairly (re)new to Solaris 10. In fact I was even quite good at it, but that was about 10 years ago, so now I am back to beginner status Smilie

I installed a new machine with an internal 16port RAID attached to an Areca 1260 controller. Also attached is an external SCSI-Raid.

The raid has three volume sets of each 2TB in size (some drives are not in use)

I managed to load the driver at the installation process (which was kind of not so really funny) and installed Solaris in a 10G partition inside the first volume set.

Now, the system is working fine, but when I try to create a new ZFS holding the other partitions, which are supposed to form a 12T filesystem including the three volume sets internal plus the external, it does not show the other volume sets:

Code:
obelix:/etc/init.d# format
Searching for disks...done

The last one is the first volume set with Solaris installed on. But where are c7t0d1 and so on? Am I missing something?

PS: I just changed the SCSI IDs for the second and third volume set and now they are recognized, but not as disks:

Code:
      4. c7t0d0 <DEFAULT cyl 1273 alt 2 hd 255 sec 315>
          /pci@0,0/pci8086,2690@1c/pci8086,370@0/pci17d3,1260@e/sd@0,0
       5. c7t1d0 <DEFAULT cyl 53467 alt 2 hd 255 sec 315>
          /pci@0,0/pci8086,2690@1c/pci8086,370@0/pci17d3,1260@e/sd@1,0
       6. c7t2d0 <DEFAULT cyl 64919 alt 2 hd 255 sec 189>
          /pci@0,0/pci8086,2690@1c/pci8086,370@0/pci17d3,1260@e/sd@2,0

Good? Bad? Somewhere between?

Second, I cannot create a new partition in the volume set with solaris running on. Can't that be avoided, as I do not want to alter the active partition, merely creating a new one?

Thanks in advance!

do you want to set up raid on all disks or ?

They are hardware raids, or what do you mean? I meanwhile created a zfs pool, but still need to include the volume set with solaris on...

Code:
zpool create <poolname> raidz <disks>

this command sets up raid5 and all your disks Smilie

Yes dear, but I have hardware raid-controllers in those boxes, so I don't need no zfs-software-raid Smilie

But back on the topic:

Was it wise to take a 2TB volume set, split in two partitions:

a) 10G Solaris system

b) 1990G ZFS part

So I would now create the second partition on this set and add it to the zfs pool.

You probably might reconsider that. The fact you have hw raid controllers doesn't necessarily means using them is wise. ZFS direct disk handling is generally viewed as a better solution than hardware raid.

Anyway, how many physical disks are available and what is their size ?

16 500G HDDs internal
16 500G HDDs in the external SCSI to SATA bay.

You are referring to a Raid0 on the hardware said and a zraid?
