for IDE disks your remark is right but for SATA it is the well known notation! and the question was about SATA disks... the above output is from vbox on intel system with c0=IDE and c2=SATA controller.
You mentioned notation "c0t0d0sx" which is valid for Sparc + SCSI drives!

You are correct. I was assuming the SATA framework was used which is recommended vs IDE compatibility mode for performance reasons.
As a side note, USB and IEEE-1394 (Firewire) connected drives are also named using the same SCSI convention regardless of whether the internal disk is IDE or SATA.
