SAN DISKS - Number of slices ?

Good morning to one and all :-) Thank god its Friday, as its bee na rubbish week for me !

So, a quick question. Disks ! Ive got a few local disks, and a few SAN disks used on my solaris server. Whats confusing me, and Im not sure if there's an issue at the SAN end, or my end, regarding the naming of the disks withnin format, and the number of partitions available.

Examples :-

if I do a format, I see :-

Code:
2. c2t202400A0B8117594d0 <STK-FLEXLINE380-0619 cyl 25598 alt 2 hd 64 sec 64>
    /pci@1,700000/SUNW,qlc@0,1/fp@0,0/ssd@w202400a0b8117594,0
3. c2t202400A0B8117594d1 <STK-FLEXLINE 380-0619-50.00GB>
    /pci@1,700000/SUNW,qlc@0,1/fp@0,0/ssd@w202400a0b8117594,1
4. c2t203500A0B8117594d0 <STK-FLEXLINE380-0619 cyl 25598 alt 2 hd 64 sec 64>
    /pci@1,700000/SUNW,qlc@0,1/fp@0,0/ssd@w203500a0b8117594,0
5. c2t203500A0B8117594d1 <STK-FLEXLINE380-0619 cyl 25598 alt 2 hd 64 sec 64>
    /pci@1,700000/SUNW,qlc@0,1/fp@0,0/ssd@w203500a0b8117594,1

Disk 2,4,and 5 are have different labels / types / details, than disk 3 ? Howcome, when they are all from the SAN ?? Does this mean Ive done the wrong `type` via format ?

This seems to effect the number of partitions too. disks 2,4 and 5 have :-
Code:
partition> p
Current partition table (original):
Total disk cylinders available: 25598 + 2 (reserved cylinders)
Part Tag Flag Cylinders Size Blocks
  0 usr wm 0 - 10239 20.00GB (10240/0/0) 41943040
  1 unassigned wu 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
  2 backup wu 0 - 25597 50.00GB (25598/0/0) 104849408
  3 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
  4 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
  5 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
  6 unassigned wm 0 0 (0/0/0) 0
  7 usr wm 10240 - 20479 20.00GB (10240/0/0) 41943040

but disk 3 has

Code:
partition> p
Current partition table (original):
Total disk sectors available: 104841182 + 16384 (reserved sectors)
Part Tag Flag First Sector Size Last Sector
  0 usr wm 256 10.00GB 20971775
  1 unassigned wm 0 0 0
  2 unassigned wm 0 0 0
  3 unassigned wm 0 0 0
  4 unassigned wm 0 0 0
  5 usr wm 41943296 10.00GB 62914815
  6 usr wm 20971776 10.00GB 41943295
  8 reserved wm 104841183 8.00MB 104857566

When I was creating the ZFS / formating the local disks, I had to do a format -e and alter the SMI / EFI types then, which effect the number of slices. However, this doesnt seem to work for the SAN disks. Even if I do a format -e, or try to label the disks, dont get this option.

So, a little confused ?? So, any help from the Unix Gurus would be tremendous.

Im using solaris 10 by the way.

The difference I see is that, as you said, disk 3's label is EFI...you need a format -e to make it SMI....

you mean you tried to convert it to SMI and it didn't work ?

To keep the forums high quality for all users, please take the time to format your posts correctly.

First of all, use Code Tags when you post any code or data samples so others can easily read your code. You can easily do this by highlighting your code and then clicking on the # in the editing menu. (You can also type code tags [code] and [/code] by hand.)

Second, avoid adding color or different fonts and font size to your posts. Selective use of color to highlight a single word or phrase can be useful at times, but using color, in general, makes the forums harder to read, especially bright colors like red.

Third, be careful when you cut-and-paste, edit any odd characters and make sure all links are working property.

Thank You.

Sorry about the format.

sunfire, yep, I tried to convert the disk to smi, as it does look like its been set to efi, bit it didnt work. Turned out to be a SAN issue. SAN guy had created something wrong, or something, i dont know but its sorted now.

Thanks anyway.
