install PPP on Solaris 9

Background: I have been running Solaris 8 on an Ultra5 with 128MB and 4GB disk for years without upgrade. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Now my ISP has upgraded their software, and no longer talks to my old (asppp!) software.
Sun no longer ships newer versions of Solaris 8. So I bought Solaris 9.
Skipping other installation problems, I installed Disk 1 successfully, then the installed required me to mount Disk 2 and Languages, but did not do anything with them.
On reboot, I had a working system, but no PPP. Running ./installer from /cdrom (Disk 2), I get Insufficient memory. (Running single-user, I have 40 MB left.) Apparently you can run Solaris 9 on 128 MB, you just can’t install it.
I installed six SUNWppp* packages and now I get
  • pppd: Sory – no kernel support on this system
  • - S47pppd, during boot: PPP incorrectly installed. It appears S47pppd is missing /dev/sppp.
Now what? I need help to install PPP selectively. I don’t want to buy more memory, which may not solve the problem anyway.

Thanks.

Have you patched this system with the recommended patch cluster for Solaris 9?
Have you tried a reconfiguration reboot to rebuild the device tree?
