Solaris 5.6 crontab problem

Hello,

I cannot edit my root's crontab by using crontab -e. I know that it might be due to improperly set environmental variables but it still does not work. I use set EDITOR, set VISUAL. I cannot use export since this command does not seem to be available on my OS if you can believe that.

Anyways I manually made an entry in /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root and it seemed to work. When I did crontab -l it listed the file correctly. Cron is running as /usr/sbin/cron but the cron job does not work.

Any ideas?

Are you sure it's not running? Maybe it is running and failing. Are you redirecting standard out and standard error streams?

Code:
/usr/local/adm/mycommand > /tmp/test.out 2>&1

check the permissions of your cron file.
export EDITOR=vi
crontab -e, then edit.
Make sure the "syntax" is correct within the crontab file
