M5000 servers - XSCF functions

Hi all

A couple of new M5000 servers will be arriving soon and I need to work out how to configure the underlying domains.

It will come with 4 x CPUS, 32 Gb of memory, 4 x HD, 2 x IOtrays.

Reading the XSCF manual, I can configure the item into 2 domains, something about uni / quad xsb.

So, anyone got any advice / experience with M5000 servers and configuring the domains ?

Any points, tips, advice in how to setup, configure would be good

Cheers

sure. the IOUs on the back are basically slip down the middle. you can assign it to each domain. however, you need to realize that the dvd media tray is tied only to 1 domain. if you are making a 2 domain system, you can build from dvd on one and will then need to build from network on the other. however, you can get around this by attached an external scsi drive to the back of a scsi adapter (if you have one). for instance, my shop used an extra d240 to get around the dvd being only tied to 1 domain.

as for xscf commands... its pretty straight forward. if you are comfortable using the sc of say a 6900, you'll be fine here as well. i would give the xscf its own ip on its own non-routable network.

Hi pupp

Reading through the docs yesterday I saw that the dvd is assigned to domain 1. Currently, my server will have 4 cpus ( 2 per a board ) 32 Gb of Ram, 2 x io trays, 2 NICs, 2 HBAs.

I was going to just put everything into one domain, then zone it out via solaris 10.

But, reading the docs thought I would have a little play and see if
I can configure the components into 2 domains. A bit of training, so to speak :-}

Seems like I have enough components to do this.

From your reply, you say I should give sxcf an ip, so I would imagine you treat the xscf like a alom/lom /sc ? Correct ?? I noticed each IO tray has its own set of NIC ports, so I imagine I use one of these as its routable IP address ?? Correct ?? If I have 2 io trays, I surely dont have two xscf ?

What are the commands to configure the components ?? is it a case of logging in, typing help ? to see whats avialable ?

Reading the docs, unlike a F15K where domains are made up of boards / units, it seems that within the M5000 you can now make domains out of modules. So, in the F15K one system board with two cpu's is allocated to one domain, on the m5000 one cpu on the psb can be one domain, the other one into another domain. As long as you havew the right number of cpu's / memory, then you can make a domain ? correct ?

As for build each domain. Well, I will have 4 internal drives. Whats stopping me in building a domain, via the dvd, then synicing up the mirror. Using that mirror to then build the other domain, unsysconfig it when it comes up, and giving it a new ip etc etc ?

I do not know if u are all ready done with this .. but i had the same issue. and the workaround which i used/found was since DVD is hard coded to XSB 00-0

1. u can shutdown the domain 0 a
2.move the XSB 00-0 with new LSB 15 and
3. assign that XSB to the domain 1
4 build the domain 1 from the dvd/cd ...
5. Unassign the XSB 00-0 from domain 1 and assign it to domain 0

But i m searching for document which gives steps to partition this box (M5000) in 4 domains with SAN Boot or other alternative booting method as this box has only 4 max internal HDDs

Thanx for the reply but i already went thru both of these .. they only talk about 2 domains on M5000 and i 'm looking for more than 2 domains .. :-) the absolute requirement for creating the 3rd domain and the way out for limited hard drive in the system which i 've not found out yet :-)

Mmmm, I feel your pain. When you find the info, can you let me know how and the docs ?? I would love a copy of those too.
