limit on Solaris username lengths?

Hi

this question applies to Solaris 8,9,10 and opensolaris as in my environment it applies to all of these

Is there a limit on the size of the username (in /etc/passwd) or indeed does there come a point where, like the 8 character limitation of passwords, the system receives the input but disregards everything after the 8 characters?

we have accounts in our place called

oracle_testuser
config_management

etc

any help would be greatly appreciated

no limitations

Useradd would complain but create users with quite long names anyway:
Code:
# useradd biguserbiguserbiguserbiguserbiguserbiguserbiguserbiguser
UX: useradd: biguserbiguserbiguserbiguserbiguserbiguserbiguserbiguser name too long.

I would however recommend sticking with a 8 character maximum username (and groupname for that matter) to avoid display truncation ambiguities.

Also, in Solaris 10 (and I think Solaris 9?), long passwords are supported: Password Encryption (System Administration Guide: Security Services) - Sun Microsystems

OP is asking on usernames..
Normal usernames are short and is meant to be easy to remember and fast to access Smilie

But OP stated a false fact: "like the 8 character limitation of passwords". So I set the record straight.
