MySQL Reg. /etc/passwd file

Hi friends, i need a favour from u all i made a small change in home pc it is INTEL i had change /etc/passwd i just change the shell for the root instead of sh i kept bash and i had taken back up of the file /etc/passwd. now the problem is i am not able to log in as a root i got a error NO Shell and i did not create any users in the server it is newely installed pc. so how login to my solaris pc and change the /etc/passwd or i want to replace from the back up file.

use the same procedure for a root password reset. For the future I suggest that you do not modify the root shell. You should also use the utilities to update /etc/passwd instead of editing it directly.

You could also try to resolve the issue via FTP. FTP login doesn't use a shell, so maybe you could pull the backup copy of passwd file, rename it back to it's correct name and then push it back to the server, overwriting the bad version. Just a thought...

How can be these possible , i have just a question usually root logins are disabled for ftp and he had not created any other user ... in these case how the above solution is going to work

root should not be enabled for FTP so it is highly unlikely this solution will work. The best method is to boot off install media and edit the file.

I would go as Frank Rizzo said. it is better to mount media with default mount point provided /a, then edit the passwd file...

Just thinking outside the box. If root ftp access is configured (and some systems are set up this way), this could be a quicker (and easier) way then having to hunt for your recovery media and reboot into maintenance mode.
