Help with awk

Hi there!

I´ve only done some shell scripting from time to time, so I could do with some help with a script I am trying to do.

I am trying to get my script to do the following:
1. check a file exists (/var/opt/oracle/oratab)
2. if oratab file exists, read it, and grab the second field ($2) and put it into a variable $oh, so I can use that route to do some other checks
3. For each $oh from oratab, I want to check that an $oh/network/admin/sqlnet.ora file exists.
4. Where this file exists, I will want the script to read it and check for some parameters.

I tell you all this info because maybe someone can give me some pointers in making this neater. Otherwise I have a tendency to do a "while read line" within another, and this may not be the best for performance.

The oratab file looks something like this:

Code:
emrep1:/u01/OracleHomes/db11g:Y
emrep2:/u02/OracleHomes/db11g:Y
emrep3:/u03/OracleHomes/db11g:Y
emrep4:/u04/OracleHomes/db11g:Y

From other posts in the forum, I have gotten as far as reading $1 from each line and assigning it to a variable, then print it. Unfortunately, it only seems to print the last one in the oratab file with this:

Code:
oratab=/var/opt/oracle/oratab
eval `awk -F: < $oratab ' { print "export oh=" $2 } '`
print $oh

[oracle@dhcp-madrid-cr-10-174-106-216 ~]$ ./oratab.sh
/u04/OracleHomes/db11g

If by looking at this you think awk is not the best thing to use, feel free to point me in a different direction.

Thanks in advance!

T.

A draft version looks like:

Code:

file_name=$1
if [ -f "${file_name}" ];
then
awk -F":" '{ print $2 }' $file_name | while read line
do
if [ -f "${line}/network/admin/sqlnet.ora" ];
then
echo "file present"
fi
done
else
echo "file $file_name does not exist"
fi

Tune it as per need.

Thanks, panyam!

That really helped. I was getting really bogged down at one point. I´ve implemented your suggestion and it worked.
