0403-027 The parameter list is too long on AIX 5.3

Hi we are using AIX 5.3 64bit
I have near about 79000 log file having naming convention like "IFTMBCSun Aug 14 07:45:00 PAKST 2011".
This naming convention was created by a script error, now we need to rename these log file by removing extar spaces and (Smilie colon for that we wrote below script
Code:
ls * | while read file
do
echo $file
echo "$file" | sed "s/[ \:]//g"
mv "$file" $( echo "$file" | sed "s/[ \:]//g" )
done

This script is working fine for limited files but is not working in folder where 79000 files exist and receiving error "0403-027 The parameter list is too long on AIX 5.3"

Regards,

Hassan

Use the xargs command instead :
Code:
find /some/directory -type f -print0 | xargs -0 rm -f

Would you please provide some sample code for the same?

Wildcards are processed by the shell in UNIX.

When you issue "dir *" in DOS, the "*" will be passed as an argument to "dir", which would handle it. "ls" does not know how to handle "*", instead the shell, before passing the arguments, expands it itself by replacing the wildcard with all the filenames that fit. Only the so created line is passed to "ls" (or any other command).

This is why your error occurs: the shell tries to replace the "*" with all the filenames of 79k files and - naturally - the resulting line is too long to handle.

But "ls" will list all files anyway, so "*" is the default argument. You can simply leave it out, no?

I hope this helps.

Also, ls isn't even needed. try:

Code:
for file in *
do
  echo "$file"
  echo "$file" | sed "s/[ \:]//g"
  mv "$file" "$( echo "$file" | sed "s/[ \:]//g" )"
done

There is no such limit in this case...
