Most shells don't provide facilities to do floating arithmetics - you have to resort to 'bc':

sum=$( echo "${a} + ${b}" | bc)

echo "${a} + ${b} = ${sum}"

With bash you can use the TIMEFORMAT variable to control the time shell keyword output:
