Help with gwak command
Hello,

I need help with gwak command. I have this output


Code:
123456_BLA_BLA

I would like to print the first 6 charaters (123456) using gwak command.

I've never heard of a gwak command??? If you mean awk or gawk (or on Solaris/SunOS systems nawk or /usr/xpg4/bin/awk), try:

echo 123456_BLA_BLA | awk '{print substr($0, 1, 6)}'

but, this could be much more efficiently done using modern shell parameter expansions without invoking an external utility.

-- example of Don's suggestion using bash shell rather than gawk:

$ a="123456_BLA_BLA"
$ echo ${a:0:6}
123456

0 is the starting place in the string, zero is the very first position
6 is the number of characters you want to retrieve from the a variable
