If you use the octal value for newline it will work most of the time:

Code:
echo "hi \012 hi"

gives
Code:
hi
 hi

which means the newline character was embedded before the space in front of "hi".

Sed command

Hi Perderabo,

My understanding was the comand A behaves as same as Command B, and the only difference is that the character "\" allow's the command to be spanned accross multiple lines.

Command A :

#!/bin/ksh
sed 's/String1/string0\
string1\
String2/' < aa

Command B :

#!/bin/ksh
sed 's/String1/string0string1String2/' < aa

Thanks,
Sanish.

Well your understanding was wrong. Try them. ksh ignores backslashes inside single quotes. "print -r" will ignore all echo backslash esacapes. Try:
print -r 'a\
b'
