Problem with for loop

i am having a problem with for loop here is the code

Code:
echo "Enter the number of records: "
  read n
  rm data.txt
  echo "Name" "Roll no." "Marks 1" "Marks 2" "Marks" >> data.txt
  for((i=0;i<n;i++)) #here is the error
  do

    echo "Enter the name: "
    read name
    echo "Enter the roll number: "
                                                              1,1           Top
        read rollno
    echo "Enter the marks in subject 1: "
    read m1
    echo "Enter the marks in subject 2: "
    read m2
    echo "Enter the marks in subject 3: "
    read m3
    echo $name $rollno $m1 $m2 $m3 >> data.txt
  done

pratyush@ubuntu:~$ sh database.sh
database.sh: 23: Syntax error: Bad for loop variable

Try with spaces:-

for (( i = 0; i < n; i++ ))

none worked
i am running the program by "sh database.sh"
and its not working
but when i run like this

chmod u+x database.sh
./database.sh
it works fine :/

You're using two different shells without realizing it. On ubuntu, sh is dash. dash does not support those for-loop variants.

Your problems will resolve if you explicitly name bash instead of sh.

By the way, this is a perfect example of why the operating system should always be specified in a help request. If not for the word "ubuntu" in your prompt, this would probably still be unsolved.
