Thank you. That did get me much closer to what I need. I am still having an issue with the AppName only searches.
I should have provided a little more detail originally. The script is going to be used as a template for people to create start/stop jobs. The applications run as part of a domain within another application (Tibco).
I have the start and stop segments and working fine. I would like to add validation that the process actually started or stopped though, hence my grep statement.
The PIDs would look something like:
/path/to/file/{domain}/path/{domain}/more/files{AppName}/more/files
They enter the {domain} and {AppName} variables in their portion of the script.
When the app ends in a number the statement works without issue:
When it is just "AppName", the PIDs for AppName, AppName-1, AppName-2, etc. all come back.
If you're just trying to get that expression only, out of a line, grep is not a very good command.
The awk command is much more suited for things like this.
Try this:
If there is a reason you're using ps -ef, instead, then you'll just need to make the $11 correspond to the correct column number, such as $8.
i have this line of code that looks for the same file if it is currently running and returns the count.
`ps -eaf -o args | grep -i sfs_pcard_load_file.ksh | grep -v grep | wc -l`
basically it is assigned to a variable
