comparing files

i have two file e.g cmp1 and cmp2
cmp1 has abcdef and cmp2 has abcdefghijkl

cmp1 has:
a
b
c
d
e
f
=========
cm2 has:
a
b
c
d
e
f
g
h
i
j

Actually i want while comparing between cmp1 and cmp2 if script will find the content of cmp1 is available in cmp2 ...then it will return pass...........

easy enough to do...what do you have so far? provide some sense of your intended direction and someone will probably chime in and assist...

when i am doing cmp cmp1 cmp2 then it is giving the difference..but i do nt want the diff .i am wanting if script find the content of cmp1 in cmp2 then it will return pass...irrespective other content of cmp2.

can any pne plesae help me on it?

You can use if statements to key off of the return code of a command. You could do something similar to the following:

if ! cmp <file a> <file b>; then
echo "pass!"
fi

If I understand correctly, you want to return "pass" if all the lines of cmp1 are in cmp2, and you don't care if cmp2 has some extra lines. If so, then try...
Code:
[[ $(comm -23 cmp1 cmp2 | wc -l) -eq 0 ]] && echo pass
