[tcsh2bash] Tab completion - 'enhanced' equivalent in bash?

I really like tcsh's:

set completion='enhanced'

because it treats underscores and dash signs the same. I don't have to reach for the shift key when trying to complete files that have underscores. As far as I know, there is nothing like this in bash.

Does such a thing exist in bash? If not, why do people curse tcsh as being inferior to bash?

While tcsh is a very good interactive shell, it is not good for scripting.

For interactive use. bash has almost everything that tcsh has, and for some things is much better.

For someone who writes a lot of scripts, it makes little sense to use tcsh, because the syntax is very different. In bash, one can test segments of scripts at the command line.

However, someone asked the same question as you recently in another fourm (it may have been a bash mailing list), but I don't remember what answer was given.

It may, in fact, be possible to do what you want using bash's programmable completion.

Thanks for the info, cfajohnson.

I wish people wouldn't write articles like the following which trash tcsh:

Stop Using (and Teaching) C-Shell and Tcsh

As far as I can see, people still have to use interactive shells in 2009 - so to discourage tcsh on the basis of being a poor scripting shell is unfair.

That said, in hindsight I wish I invested my time trying to learn Z-shell instead of tcsh or bash. Not sure when I'll have it in me to try and migrate.
