Regularly checking with shell script

Hi, I am new in scripting and also in Linux. I wrote my first script recently. I have an external hdd connected to my debian machine. I am spinning it down using a spindown code (code.google.com/p/spindown/)when I am not using it ( automatically after 1 hour). The problem was I wanted to know when it started to spin up and spinned down and I wrote a script for that. When the hdd spins up I get an email saying that at that time it started to spin up.
I made it to check continously at every 5 seconds with sleep and while commands for this purpose and then I run it in a screen session.

Everything works perfect but as I am running my system root on a flash disk and it always(every 5 seconds) blinks as it is reading. Is there a way to run it from ram or something like that so it does not always read the flash disk. Or maybe I should use crontab instead of screen to run the script. Do you have any advice for my situation.

Thanks in advance..

yes, running your script as a cron job would be better

Is there any other ways to run a bash script regularly to check a system output?
