Question Redirecting columns from multiple files

Hi all,

I have two years worth of daily files (e.g. 090107.dat) and I'd like to write a BASH script to extract the same 2 columns from each of these files and copy them all to one separate file.

Could anyone please point me in the right direction as I'm new to shell scripting?

It would be much appreciated.

cat file1 file2 file3 | awk '{ print $1, $2 }' > new file

where $1 and $2 are the column numbers.

Cheers Padow, looks like that does the job but is there a way I can add a third column indicating which file (date) that data comes from?

Code:
awk '{ print FILENAME, $1, $2 }' file1 file2 fileN> new file
