problem in if then else condition
Hi ,

I am trying the following simple script . But it is always giving 1 output. Dont know why

Code:
#!/bin/sh
find . -name "a.log"
if [ $? -eq 0 ] ; then
echo "1"
else
echo "0"
fi

Kindly advice. it is giving 1 output even when the a.log file is not there

$? will always return 0, that wont show if anything was found just that the command executed properly.

findit=`find . -name "myfile.txt" | wc -l`
if [ $findit -eq 0 ]; then
        echo "None Found"
else
        echo "Found Some!"
fi

ok ...that means i have to declare the variable ....let me just try your way..

Why are we using " wc -l " here ??

You dont have to declare the variable:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
if [ `find . -name "myfile.txt" | wc -l` -eq 0 ]; then
        echo "None Found"
else
        echo "Found Some!"
fi

wc -l counts the number of lines (-l = lines) found.

problem in if then else condition
It always will give you $?="0" because the command exuted without any errors instead you can use this code to test if a file is exist or not.

code using bash shell :

#!/bin/bash

[ -e "/path to/filename" ] && echo "file exists" || echo "file not exists"

OR using
#!/bin/sh

[ -f "/path to/filename" ] && echo "file exists" || echo "file not exists"

If you are just looking for one file in a certain location use this:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
if [ -e /path/to/a.log ]; then
        echo "Found it!"
else
        echo "Not found"
fi
